# Sequence board layout

> The Sequence board is a **10×10 grid of 100 spaces**. Ninety-six of them show a playing card: **every card except the jacks, twice**. The four corners are **free spaces** that count for everyone.

## How the board is laid out

- **100 spaces:** 96 card spaces and 4 free corners.
- **48 different cards:** a standard deck without its four jacks. Each one is printed twice, which fills the 96 card spaces.
- **No jacks on the board.** Jacks are wild cards you play from your hand. Two-eyed jacks place a chip anywhere open, and one-eyed jacks remove an opponent's chip.
- **A spiral from the centre.** The cards run in a spiral out from the middle, so the two copies of a card sit in different parts of the board.

## Why every card appears twice

Any card in your hand can go on either of its two spaces, so each card gives you a choice. Pick the space that helps more of your lines, or blocks more of your opponent's. If both spaces are already taken, the card is **dead**: discard it, draw a replacement and play again. The full turn rules are in [how to play Sequence](https://sequence.stratzagames.com/how-to-play.md).

## The four free corners

Each corner counts as a chip of your colour, and of everyone else's. A line that runs into a corner needs only **four** of your chips, which is why corners matter so much in [Sequence strategy](https://sequence.stratzagames.com/sequence-strategy.md).

## Printing the board

1. [Download the board](https://sequence.stratzagames.com/images/sequence-board-layout.svg). It is a vector image, so it stays sharp at any size.
2. Print it on A3 or tabloid paper, or tile it across two A4 or letter sheets.
3. Shuffle **two standard decks** together (104 cards, including eight jacks).
4. Use coins, buttons or counters in two or three colours as chips.

Not sure how many cards to deal? See the [Sequence rules for 2, 3, 4 or more players](https://sequence.stratzagames.com/sequence-rules-players.md).

## The board in each mode

- **[Sequence No Jack](https://sequence.stratzagames.com/sequence-no-jack.md)** uses the same board, with the jacks taken out of the deck.
- **[Sequence Catch](https://sequence.stratzagames.com/sequence-catch.md)** hides three rabbits on board spaces. Only a line through a rabbit you hold wins.
- **[Sequence Block](https://sequence.stratzagames.com/sequence-block.md)** walls off the eight spaces of one card rank each game.

## Sequence board FAQ

**How many spaces are on a Sequence board?**

One hundred: a 10×10 grid with 96 card spaces and four free corners.

**Are there jacks on the Sequence board?**

No. Jacks are wild cards played from your hand, so they never appear on the board.

**How many decks of cards does Sequence use?**

Two standard decks shuffled together: 104 cards, including eight jacks.

**Can I print a Sequence board?**

Yes. [Download the board](https://sequence.stratzagames.com/images/sequence-board-layout.svg); it prints sharply at any size.
